Eye Bolts

ASTM A489

Lifting eyes carrying this specification number are liquid quenched and tempered, but may be processed from carbon steel. This steel could have a fracture appearance transition temperature higher than operating temperatures. Thus, in order to minimize the possibility of brittle cleavage failure, these eyes should never be loaded above the proof load, and should not be used when there are surface discontinuities on them. This specification includes two types of shank pattern and one style of shank length.

Type 1: Plain pattern (straight shank)

Type 2: Shoulder pattern

Style B: Short length

Metric eye bolts

Fully threaded eye bolts. The only eye bolts rated for an angular load.

ASTM F541

This specification covers forged, quenched and tempered, alloy steel threaded eyebolts. These eyebolts have improved toughness qualities and are meant for use in low temperature operations. They are developed chemically and metallurgically to produce a low transition temperature, which minimizes brittle failure. The maximum thread size is 2.5 inches (63.5 mm)

ASTM 193 B8

This specification covers alloy steel and stainless steel bolts for pressure vessels, valves, flanges and fittings for high temperature and high pressure service. There are several grades including ferritic steel (high chromium, low carbon magnetic stainless steel) and austenitic (high chromium, high nickel, low carbon, non-magnetic stainless steel). These are designated B5, B8 etc. ASTM B8 is often available in national course (UNC) thread pitches when used in traditional applications. Threads are specified 8 threads per inch for diameters above one inch.

Class 1: Stainless steel, AISI 304, carbide solution treated

Class 2: Stainless steel, AISI 304, carbide solution treated, strain hardened

ASTM A193 B8M Class 1: Stainless steel, AISI 316, carbide solution treated

ASTM 153

This specification covers zinc coating (hot-dip) on iron and steel hardware. Standard Specification applies to hardware products such as castings, fasteners, rolled, pressed, and forged products, and miscellaneous threaded objects that will be centrifuged, spun, or otherwise handled to remove the excess zinc.  The requirements of this specification are very similar to those in A123, except for the addition of threaded products and embrittlement requirements. A153 requires a continuous, smooth, and uniform finish with no uncoated areas (including on the threads) or issues that interfere with its intended use.  There are coating thickness minimums, but no maximums, and the threads are not subject to the coating thickness requirement.  The adherence requirement is the same as A123, for strong bond throughout the life of the hot-dip galvanized steel. 

Eye Nuts

ASTM A105

This specification covers standards for forged carbon steel piping components, such as flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts, for use in pressure systems at ambient (uncontrolled) and higher-temperature service conditions. Materials will be subjected to heat treatment (annealing , normalizing, tempering, or quenching). Material shall conform to carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, nickel, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium contents. The forgings shall be subjected to tension, hardness and hydrostatic (pressure exerted by liquids at rest) tests, with the latter applicable when required. Material shall adhere to tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction of area, and hardness requirements.

ASTM A194

The ASTM A194 specification covers carbon, alloy and stainless steel nuts intended for use in high-pressure and/or high-temperature service.

Class 2H: Quenched & tempered carbon steel heavy hex nuts

Class 8: Stainless AISI 304 heavy hex nuts

Class 8M: Stainless AISI 316 heavy hex nuts

Pad Eyes

ASTM A521

This specification covers untreated and heat-treated steel closed-impression die forgings for general industrial use. These forgings will be annealed, normalized, tempered and quenched. The manufactured forgings will be free from harmful surface discontinuities, roughness, excessive scale, and fins which are indications of overheating, burning, or other injurious conditions.

Grades: CA, CC, CC1, CE, CF, CF1, CG, AA, AB, AC, AD, AE, AF, AG, and AH.

Turnbuckle Bodies

ASTM F1145

This specification covers  welded, cast, or forged turnbuckles with and without jam nuts. A turnbuckle is an internally threaded loop or sleeve intended for assembly with a threaded stud, eye, hook, or jaw at each end, used for applying tension to rods, wire rope, and so forth.

Type I: forged, spread, resistance welded and arc or gas welded

Classes: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, Class F, Class G, and Class H

ASTM A182

Standard Specification for Forged or Rolled Alloy and Stainless Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and Parts for High-Temperature Service. ASTM A182 is a martensitic (tempered and hardened) stainless steel.

ASTM A668

ASTM A668 covers untreated and heat treated carbon and alloy steel forgings for general industrial use. A668 cover carbon forgings in six classes, and alloy steel forgings in seven classes. Other forging specifications are available for specific applications.

C Clamps and Screws

ASTM A181

This specification covers the carbon steel forgings used for general-purpose piping. Heat treatment is neither required nor prohibited, but when applied, it will consist of tempering, annealing, normalizing, or normalizing and tempering.

Classes: 60 and 70
